This is a project that I go back to again and again. It’s just a simple tote bag tutorial. I find them practical for just about any reason, and since I rarely have time to fancy it up and try out new looks (read: making it as part of a gift the night before or sometimes the day of), I keep it as simple as possible and allow the fabric to be the star of the show.
One reason I like to keep it simple is because they work so great as gift bags. My recent favorites are the ones I made for my son’s preschool teachers from pretty Joel Dewberry Modern Meadow and Aviary 2 fabric.
In each bag we put a copy of One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp and a handmade bookmark with butterflies made from my son’s finger prints.
The teacher’s loved them, and of course, the totes are reusable. Though I almost never make the same size twice (give or take an inch or so) and I often vary the handle thickness (I like a thicker handle) and very, very often leave out the gusset part (I don’t know why, I just don’t always think it’s necessary), the tutorial I worked from originally was this one from Skip to My Lou. It’s simple, easy, oh, and did I mention reversible?
